Gender Equality in the Medical Sector

Gender equality is one of those topics that many feel should have been put to rest years ago. In many areas however, gender inequality does still exist. There are many countries in which gender inequality in the medical sector continues to causes difficulties for all concerned. While there are public health reforms in many areas, this typically leads to less money for health care, which can eventually result in poor working conditions, shortages of medical staff and even migration of workers in the health fields. Overall, the quality of medical care can be significantly reduced and workers are simply overstressed with their jobs.

In order to improve many of these conditions, organizations are working to influence public health services in many countries. They are working to improve the quality of health care and make that care accessible to everyone.

In Bangladesh for instance, unions are developing policies and programs that will help to achieve equality in the medical sector for both genders. In India, unions have worked to improve the development of leadership skills for women. This helps to promote gender equality. They have also worked to form a Joint Union Health sector as well as a childcare forum.

Unions in Nepal have worked to establish a network that will improve the communication and sharing of information on medical issues. Other countries have worked to establish and organize family health workers unions, to increase the participation of females and assist women by providing more protection while at work and teaching them to deal with violence in the workplace. Helping to develop the skills of women will help to sustain the medical sector.

While the medical sector has dramatically improved over the past few decades with regards to equality toward women, there still seem to be some changes that need to be made in many areas. The United States and many other countries currently employ women in the medical sector and pay them the same as men are paid for the same jobs. Women physicians for instance, make as much in some areas as do men physicians.

There exists gender inequality in many sectors. The medical sector is simply one of those many. While there are those areas that have little to no inequality, it does exist in extreme cases in some areas. Women are simply not considered to be as adequate or as high in worth as men for many jobs.

Again, gender inequality is something that many feel should not need further discussion. There are those however, who simply feel that there exists no equality between men and women, particularly in the healthcare field. There will likely always be areas in which women are deemed less worthy than men. However, with the changes that are currently taking place in many areas, it seems as if most of the world now realizes that women can perform the duties associated with jobs in the medical sector, and should be compensated as per the job at hand and not pertaining to their gender.
